Red Sox crush Dell Rapids PBR

Red Sox crush Dell Rapids PBR by Steven Thum The Vermillion Red Sox gained a measure of revenge against the defending State B Champions, and the team that knocked the Red Sox out of last years tournament, with a convincing 16-0 win on Monday night at Prentis Park.

After a scoreless first inning, the Red Sox bats got going in a big way in the second. Chris Belding slammed the first pitch he saw from PBR starter Kevin Wilson out of the park to make it 1-0. Steve Fejfar followed with a solo homer of his own to make it 2-0.

The Red Sox were not done scoring as Jon Merrigan drew a walk after Fejfars dinger. Wilson retired the next two batters, but Jay Merrigan kept the rally going with a single. Jon Merrigan hustled to third on the play, and with the throw going to third, Jay Merrigan advanced to second. With two runners in scoring position, Dustin Moore delivered a clutch single to bring home both Merrigan brothers and make it 4-0.

Jim McNaughton reached on an error by PBR shortstop Michael Amundson. Jason Huskas single brought home Moore to make it 5-0.

Meanwhile, Red Sox starting pitcher Jay Berkenpas was cruising along, and he would allow just one hit on the night.

Two more runs scored for the Red Sox in the third as Fejfar led off with a walk. Jason Gault came on for Fejfar as a courtesy runner, and moved to second on a single by Jon Merrigan.

Colby Lessmans line drive single brought home Gault. With runners at first and second, Jim Stegge laid down a bunt and moved both runners ahead into scoring position. Jay Merrigan grounded out to second, but that brought home Jon Merrigan, and the Vermillion lead was now 7-0.

The Red Sox kept pouring it on in the fourth inning. Jim McNaughtons pop fly dropped in between three PBR defenders, and with McNaughton hustling towards second, the throw in from the outfield got away from John Schwebach at second, and McNaughton would end up at third. Huska walked, and Belding followed with a short, high fly ball to short left field that dropped in for a single, bringing home McNaughton. Fejfar clubbed his second homer of the night, a three-run blast, that make it 11-0.

The Red Sox finished the game in the fifth inning. Tracy Langer came on in relief for PBR, but he was rocked for five runs. He retired just one Red Sox batter, and that was on the fielders choice.

A couple of PBR errors in the fifth allowed a couple of runs to score for the Red Sox, and then Jon Merrigans three-run homer made it 16-0, and the game was over via the mercy rule.

Fejfar slammed two homers, a single, drew a walk, scored four runs, and had three RBIs to lead the Red Sox offense. Belding had a couple of singles to go with a homer, and scored three runs and drove in two. Moore collected three singles. Lessman and McNaughton both had two singles. The Red Sox pounded out 17 hits and four home runs.

Berkenpas allowed just one hit in going the distance for the win. He fanned five and walked two.

With the win, the Red Sox improve to 18-0. Dell Rapids PBR drops to 11-12.

The Red Sox will play host to Elk Point on Sunday, July 14, and Newcastle on Wednesday, July 17.
