USD summer commencement is Aug. 1 The University of South Dakota summer 2002 commencement exercises will be held in Vermillion on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. on the Old Main quadrangle, USD campus. Approximately 350 students will be candidates for degrees at that time.
USD Acting President Donald C. Dahlin will confer degrees. The lead marshals will be Dr. Barbara Yutrzenka and Dr. Leon Korte. The organist will be Dr. Larry Schou and the vocalist will be Erin Conlon. Bob Sutton of Sioux Falls will represent the USD Alumni Association at the ceremony. USD Dean Emeritus Charles N. Kaufman will deliver a commencement address titled "Janus: Perennial Campus Visitor." Kaufman retired from USD in 1999 after 40 years of
service. He came to USD in 1958 as a graduate assistant in the School of Business. From there, he went on to serve 20 years as the graduate dean and associate vice president for academic affairs in addition to teaching classes.
Kaufman is a native of Parkston. He and his wife Fern have three children, all of whom graduated from USD. The Kaufmans reside in Vermillion and continue to enjoy their involvement with university activities.
Ruth Ziolkowski will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the ceremony. Ziolkowski is president of the board of directors and the chief executive officer of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. The Foundation is the governing entity for the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Ziolkowski assumed her leadership position after the death of her husband Korczak Ziolkowski, who was the sculptor and creator of the Crazy Horse Memorial.
