Vermillion junior golfers compete at SDGA Tourney by Jim Prosser The annual South Dakota Junior Golf Tournament was conducted Monday and Tuesday, July 8-9, at several different Huron courses. More than 175 boys and 75 girls were registered for the two day event.
The boys� 12/13 year age group had three Vermillion participants who scored in the top 20 in their division � Broc Gauer, 12th; Alex Schaack, 14th; and Jordan Boots, 19th. In the 12/13 girls division, Chelsea Gauer was the lone Vermillion entrant and ranked 11th in her group.
The 14/15-year-old-boys and girls played 18 holes, both days. Brad Schaack scored 166 to place 23rd out of the 65 participants in this section. Chris Moen placed 30th; Jared Bates and Charles Odson also competed but did not finish in the top 30. Jackie Thomas was the 10th in her 14/15 age group scoring a two day total of 196 (she improved her first round score by eight strokes on day two.)
In the girls� 16/17 age division playing a regular 18 hole round, on each day, Allison Stewart scored 157 for a third place tie, and Karrie Plate tied for sixth with 165. Rob Schaack was tied for ninth place in the boys� 16/17 age group, with a first day 79 and then a 76 on day two. Nathan Boots placed in the top 25 with a 167 total score to give him his final standing.
The Vermillion city junior golf tournament will be held Aug. 1 to complete the regular golf lesson program. There will be an open tournament for juniors at The Bluffs, sponsored by the men�s league, scheduled Aug. 5.
