Vermillion Post #1 defeats Dakota Valley by Jim Prosser I hesitate to call it a comedy of errors because it wasnt funny as Vermillion and Dakota Valley shared in messing up the field with 16 miscues in the fourth round game of the Region 3B tournament played at Irene on Tuesday, July 23.
Vermillion Post #1 was assigned the visitors role and took a first inning 1-0 lead; then, aided by four errors, scored four runs and the handwriting was on the wall.
Dakota Valley Post #319 scored an unearned run in the second inning but Vermillions starting pitcher Brett Mockler held them scoreless the rest of the way garnering a no-hitter in the process.
Some humorous occurances aided the visitors scoring in the fourth inning, the bases had runners on first and third when Ray OConnor drove a liner to the centerfield fence driving in a run. When the outfielder threw the ball wildly toward the plate, a second run crossed home plate as another bad toss left home plate unguarded, and OConnor had a playground homer (he was credited with a double).
Five errors were commited during that episode. Mockler did walk three while registering two Ks and the team commited three errors behind him.
Line score: Post #1 16 runs, 11 hits, 3 errors, 8 lob; DV Post #391 1 run, 0 hits, 3 errors, 5 lob.
Offensive leader was B.J. Campbell who was 2 5, had 3 runs, and 3 RBIs. Drew Lawrence went 1 4, 1 run, 4 RBIs taking advantage of sac flys; Eric Rickord had a perfect 3 3 scoring 3 runs (he stole home when there were two outs in the third inning).
Kevin Bleil was 2 for 4, scored twice with an RBI; Jeff Gilbertson scored 2 runs going 1 for 2 and walking twice. Mockler had 3 RBIs; Kyle Mollet scored 2 runs on 1 4 batting.
Post #1 was scheduled to play the winner of the Irene/Lennox contest at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24.
