Paperno named assistant volleyball coach at South Dakota Head volleyball coach Darin Weber has announced that Jody Paperno, former head coach at Adams State, has been named assistant volleyball coach at The University of South Dakota. Paperno will work with many aspects of coaching, specifically on defense and will serve as recruiting coordinator. Paperno brings extensive coaching and professional experience to South Dakota. A year ago, she directed the Grizzlies to a 9-17 finish and a fifth place finish in the West Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (7-12 RMAC).
"Her experience and knowledge of the game along with her excitement and leadership will really help this program grow," Weber said. "The new ideas she brings from her experiences at the Division-I level and head coaching her own program will have an instant impact on the South Dakota program."
Originally of Chatsworth, CA, Paperno began her coaching career as the top assistant for NCAA Division I Saint Mary's College (Moraga, CA) for three years. Paperno was the first assistant coach for Golden West Junior College in Huntington Beach, CA. Golden West has won 19 consecutive state championships. She also coached club volleyball for many years, taking one U18 team to New Orleans to compete at the Junior Olympic national tournament.
A standout at North Dakota, Paperno was all-North Central Conference and still ranks in the top five of various Fighting Sioux's career record charts.
"This is a great opportunity to be back in the North Central Conference. I had a great experience playing and going to school at North Dakota," Paperno said. "The level of competition is high and I'm excited about being a part of it again."
After graduation, Paperno spent the summer of 1997 touring Italy playing professional beach volleyball as part of the "American Taste Cup" Tournament. She is an avid beach volleyball player, competing in the California Beach Volleyball Association, as well as competing in qualifying tournaments for the professional beach tours.
Paperno received a bachelor's degree in kinesiology at UND in December of 1996. She also received physical education teaching credentials and is in the process of completing a master's degree in education from Saint Mary's.
