Sturgis Rally traffic numbers up The Department of Transportation has tallied the traffic numbers for the 2002 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the results show that the number of vehicles entering Sturgis this year was up 5.9 percent from last year.
Traffic numbers were gathered at 20 locations in Sturgis from Aug. 5 through Aug. 11. Numbers collected at the six sites that monitored traffic coming into Sturgis show that 561,752 vehicles entered the town during the seven days of the rally this year, as compared to 530,667 vehicles in 2001.
The largest influx of traffic occurred on Tuesday this year, with 97,342 vehicles entering Sturgis that day. Traffic coming into town was the lightest on Sunday, with only 33,835 vehicles entering. The average number of vehicles entering town each day during the 2002 rally was 80,250.
The department has collected traffic information for the rally since 1990, which was the 50th anniversary of the rally.
