VHS golfers open season with second place at invite by Jim Prosser With a short pre-season practice time and facing a group of serious contenders for state honors, the VHS boys golf team entered the West Central Invitational at Hartford on Monday, Aug. 26.
The 18-hole tournament involved nine varsity and JV teams from diverse classes and/or locations in South Dakota.
Final team standings were: 1. Madison (301) 2. Vermillion (313) 3. West Central (329) 4. Milbank (332) 5. Lennox (339) 6. Aberdeen Central (354) 7. Winner (359) 8. Sisseton (388) 9. Canton (434).
Scores for Vermillion individuals were: Rob Schaack � 75 (second); Brad Schaack � 76 (fourth); Chris Moen � 81 (10th); and Nathan Boots � 81 (tie); Ryan Powell � 96.
The JV team placed third with a score of 383, behind Madison and Milbank.
Individual scores were: Alex Schaack � 90; Broc Gauer � 92; Joel Anderson � 94; Jordan Boots � 101; and Charles Odson � 105.
Coach Kirk Hogen has another young team to start the season. The varsity has one senior, one junior, three sophomores, one freshman and one eighth-grader.
�Rob Schaack (senior) and Nathan Boots (junior) are experienced golfers with good leadership skills, and we have a young team that loves to play golf. Our biggest concern is how we manage ourselves during the tough challenges,� Hogen said.
The complete roster is comprised of 13 golfers � seniors Rob Schaack and Joel Anderson; junior Nathan Boots; sophomores Chris Moen, Charles Odson, Brad Schaack and Steve Foltz; eighth grade Steven Timms and Ryan Powell; seventh grade Jordan Boots, Broc Gauer, Mikal Ustad and Alex Schaack.
The team was scheduled for a match at The Bluffs on Friday, Aug. 30 against Sioux City East.
