Young athletes compete in track meet The USA Track and Field Region 8 Meet was held July 11-14 at Indianola, IA Region 8 is comprised of athletes from Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconson, Minnesota, North and South Dakota. Competing from Vermillion were Andrew Manning, and Annie and Casey Carlson.

Annie Carlson placed first in the Intermediate (15-16 years) Girls Heptathlon scoring 3443 points. Day 1 results: 100m hurdles � 18.2, shot put � 27'8", high jump � 4'11", 200m � 28.7. Day 2 results: Long jump � 15'3.5", javelin � 94'1" and 800m � 2:43. Casey Carlson placed fifth in the Midget (11-12 years) Boys Pentathlon scoring 1529 points. Results: 80m hurdles � 16.2, shot put � 27'6", high jump � 4'1", long jump � 12'5", and 1500m � 5.48.

Saturday and Sunday's track and field results were: Annie Carlson placed third in the high jump (4'11") and javelin (86'5"). Andrew Manning placed fourth in the 3000m (10:32.68) and seventh in the 1500m (5:05.58) and Casey Carlson placed seventh in the high jump (4'1") and shot put (26'3").

The top three place winners qualified for the National USATF Junior Olympic meet held July 23-28 in Omaha, NE. The national meet is the world's largest youth track meet. Annie Carlson competed in the heptathlon, javelin and high jump.

She placed 13th in the Intermediate Girls heptathlon scoring 3399 points and 16th in the javelin with a throw of 89'7".
