Check it Out at the Vermillion Public Library

Check it Out at the Vermillion Public Library by Anne Marshall VPL Showcased Book of the Week

There is a village called Jezero in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 1990, before the Bosnian War, a villager named Smajo Malkoc gave his sons two golden fish in an aquarium. When the war finally came to the village, Smajo's family fled from the Bosnian-Serb forces. In an attempt to save the fish they couldn't take with them the mother released the fish into a nearby lake. In 1995, when the family returned to find their home and village in ruins, they did find the lake teaming with life. Left alone, the golden fish had fed on the underwater life, thrived, and multiplied. Gleam and Glow by award-winning Eve Bunting is a fictitious tale taken from an actual story. The inspiring and beautiful paintings that illustrate this account are by Peter Sylvada, and rival the works of Van Gogh, Monet or Cassatt.
