Eighth-grade Redbirds with two late touchdowns by Jim Prosser On Saturday morning, Sept. 14, the Redbird eighth-grade football team made a serious statement when they scored two touchdowns ?back-to-back� in the fourth quarter to snatch victory from a loss against Lennox as they played at the VHS field.
Trailing 14-8 after three quarters Vermillion took the lead scoring six points early in the fourth quarter, and after a interception, scored eight points on the first play of the possession to make the final score 22-14 for the Redbirds.
The Redbirds� offense was led by Matt Milldrum who gained 103 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns; he also ran for a two point conversion. Ryan Gilberrtson had nine rushes for 33 yards, a TD and two point PAT. Quarterback Ryan Scheidel was 1 for 5 passing gaining 26 yards. He was intercepted once.
The defense was led in tackles by Milldrum with 13, a quarterback sack, and a fumble recovery; Bobby Dykstra had six tackles, caused a fumble, intercepted a pass, and recovered a fumble; Highrock Fisher and Scheidel each recorded five tackles; and Jeff Donnelly had four tackles.
