Lady Tanager soccer team loses to Sioux Falls Lincoln The 2002 Tanager soccer team fell to defending state champion Sioux Falls Lincoln in its season opener Tuesday at Cotton Park by the score of 5-1. The lone goal for the Tanagers was scored by eighth-grader Emma Erickson in the 16th minute of the first half.
Poor marking by the Tanagers provided Lincoln with three open shots early on, and the Tanagers found themselves down 4-1 at halftime. A better defensive effort in the second half resulted in a one additional goal for Lincoln.
Despite the loss margin, there were some bright spots in the match. Coach Jeff Pederson offered the following comments. "The number of goals scored by Lincoln is not reflective of the outstanding game played by junior goalkeeper Kat Redlin. Kat came of her line strong on three occasions to deny goals, and she retained her intensity throughout the match."
He also pointed out some promising signs on offense.
"We generated more attack tonight than we typically did against the top teams last year," Pederson said. "We were in Lincoln's defending third enough to show that our midfield play is much improved, and we had four or five real good scoring opportunities."
Next home match for the Tanagers is Sept. 12 when the Yankton Gazelles come to Cotton Park for a 6 p.m. match.
