Man Pleads Guilty To Child Porn, Theft

Man Pleads Guilty To Child Porn, Theft BROOKINGS (AP) — A former South Dakota State University student has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on his computer and petty theft by threat.

Eric J. Novotny, 20, of Miller, entered guilty pleas on Tuesday to five counts of possession of child pornography and one count of first-degree petty theft.

He has acknowledged scamming a man by using the Internet to represent himself as a teenage girl, sending the man pictures and then threatening to expose his involvement, Brookings State's Attorney Clyde Calhoon said.

Authorities seized computer equipment from Novotny's dorm room after learning of the scheme. An investigation produced 100 images of minors engaged in sex acts or simulations of sex acts, said Calhoon.

In exchange for the plea, the state dropped six additional counts of child pornography possession, and Calhoon said he would recommend a seven-year cap on prison time for Novotny when he is sentenced Oct. 4.
