The preschool, located at 816 East Clark, was started in 1882. A congregational vote authorized this special program for young children. The church council of Trinity Lutheran Church began discussing the project at their March 1982 meeting and their work culminated in the positive congregational vote on June 20, 1982. An advisory board was also appointed to assist the preschool. The members of that first board were Carla Peterson, Eleanor Offerdahl, Phil Vik, Lois Thompson, Marilyn Johnson and Pastor Bruce Williams.

The first director/teacher of the preschool was Marcia Barkmeier. The opening day was Aug. 30, 1982 with 17 students. Past directors have been Joellen Brown, Lori Obr and Diane Lowery.

Trinity Lutheran Preschool is a developmentally appropriate preschool and has been in operation for 20 years. The preschool's present enrollment is 30 students under the direction of Cindy Knutson.

The children are kept busy with many activities involving math, science, language, music, Bible story time, and fine and gross motor areas.

The children also have a monthly field trip to businesses in Vermillion, such as Jones' Food Center, Hy-Vee, Dr. Houska's dental office, the local hospital, Pizza Hut, bowling and the city library.
