Redbirds lose to West Central 14-16 by Jim Prosser The Redbird eighth-grade football team racked up 166 total yards in offense as they faced West Central at the VHS field on Saturday, Sept. 12. Trailing 8-6 at the half, Vermillion took the lead scoring eight points early in the fourth quarter. It looked like the home team would win but late in the game West Central mounted a four play, 44 yard attack which ended with a touchdown and a two point conversion leaving less than a minute on the time clock.
Vermillion attempted a couple passes but couldn�t beat the clock and the final 16-14 loss was the result.
The Redbirds� offense was led by Matt Milldrum who gained 122 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns; he also ran for the two point conversion. Quarterback Ryan Scheidel was two for five passing gaining 24 yards.
The defense was led in tackles by Bobby Dystra with nine and a pass knock down; Mildrum had seven tackles, caused a fumble, broke up a pass, and recovered a fumble; Chris Taylor recorded six tackles; and another five defensemen registered three each � Jeff Donnelly, Tim Bleil, Scheidel, Nick Rasmussen, and Zach Weiss.
