Seventh- grade Redbirds suffer loss by Jim Prosser The VMS seventh-grade football team opened its 2002 season with a loss to West Central
in a game played at the track/football complex at VHS on Thursday, Sept. 12.
The Redbirds had a tough time moving the ball on offense where they accomplished only two rushing downs and one passing.
In spite of that, the contest was close as the defense performed spectacularly recording 60 tackles and recovering two fumbles at opportune times.
West Central scored in the first quarter and Alex Smith stopped the extra point run attempt.
Vermillion scored on a 22- yard pass from Daniel Storm to Jordan Merrigan and the extra point attempt failed. The only other scores were 8 points in the second quarter by the Trojans.
The defense was awesome with 17 defensive players recording tackles: Cody Miller had 12, Daniel Storm recorded nine and a fumble recovery, Luke Heine had seven and (FR), and Thomas Mollet had five.
The season record starts at
0 1 with Lennox coming to Vermillion on Saturday, Sept. 14.
