Tanager freshman football team opens season with two losses with two losses by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshman football team opened its season Tuesday, Sept. 10, with a 30-8 loss at Sioux City East.
In a hard-fought game, the Tanager frosh fell behind in the first half and couldnt recover in spite of some good performances on offense.
Kyle Brunick ran for 22 yards on five carries and completed eight passes for 163 yards; Cody Hays went 65 yards on 13 carries and 104 yards on four receptions; and Kyle Hubert gained 59 total yards using seven runs (39 yards) and two receptions (20 yards). The young Tanagers made a commendable effort, defensively, holding the visiting team scoreless in the second half. Leading the tackle chart were: Hayes 12; Mike Hanson, Myles Runyon, and Hubert 5 each; Darrin Martin 4; and Adam Severson and Merrigan 3 each. The team registered nearly 50 tackles.
On Thursday, Sept. 12, the freshmen traveled to Brandon Valley where the same happenstance occurred with a 32-8 loss. The Tanagers were overpowered by a smothering defense as they were only able to rush 24 times and five of them were for lost yardage.
Kyle Brunick was 3 for 5 in passing for 24 yards total. Cody Hays scored the only VHS touchdown on a 56-yard kick return, and ran for the 2 point conversion.
The defense recorded over 60 tackles with Mike Hanson leading with nine. Also, Matt Sands 8; Hays 6; Darren Martin 5; Kyle Hubert and Myles Runyon 4 each.
It may be that the scheduling of double A schools might not be a good idea, coach Mark Iverson said. The Sioux City East squad was really tough offensively in the first half and their defense kept us out of the end zone until late in the game. Brandon Valley just was too much for our team. Hopefully we will improve our level of play in the future.
