Tanager JV football defeated by Canton

Tanager JV football defeated by Canton by Jim Prosser The Tanager JV football team was outscored by Canton's JV 44-20 in an unusual offense versus defense "shootout" where each team scored in various ways.

The C-Hawks had three touchdowns from halfback Josh Stahlecker on runs of six and 23 yards and a 49-yard punt return; and one each by Rob Lynde with a two-yard run following a botched punt attempt, Nick Anson on a 55-yard pass reception; and Chris Lems on a last minute two-yard run.

The Tanagers had three touchdowns by Ben Oberle, each on long runs of 48, 55, and 75 yards.

The outcome never seemed to be in doubt as Vermillion fell behind by 14 before they could mount any offense and by halftime the score stood at C-Hawks 30; Tanagers 12.

The third quarter was a wash with neither team threatening to score, and after the long pass touchdown put the game out of reach the Tanager sophomores finished up.

Oberle toted most of the running load with 14 carries for 185 yards, and Adam Brunick was 4 for 6 in passing.

There were some sterling efforts by Chris Teigen, who had eight tackles, Paul Hugo with eight tackles, Jason Donald with seven tackles and a fumble recovery, J.J. LaMei with six tackles and Jordan Anderson, who had six stops.

Several other defensemen had five, four or three tackles. The team accumulated 88 tackles.
