Tanager JV football defeats South Sioux 34-8 By Jim Prosser In an early 2002 season football game played at Cardinal Field in South Sioux City on Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Tanager JV team took a first quarter lead, courtesy of a 70-yard, nine-play, seven-minute drive engineered by quarterback Ben Oberle using Jared Burcham�s seven-yard TD run to complement the seven carries by Kyle Mollet and an Oberle to Chris Teigen 35-yard pass play.

Following a short punt by SSC JV, the visitors mounted a quick strike offensive five-play, 30-yard TD possesion capped by a one-yard run by Mollet. Near the end of the quarter, DT Jon Miller recovered a fumble at the Cardinal 15-yard line and a pass to Burcham for a score gave the Tanagers a 20-0 lead after one quarter.

Kevin Bleil took over the quartbacking duties and Oberle moved to running back for the second quarter where he rushed on seven carries for 62 yards, including a 49-yard off tackle dash to the endzone. Jordan Anderson contributed 10 yards on three carries from his fullback spot during the drive.

Vermillion built the lead in the third quarter, scoring on a five-play, 70-yard drive using runs of 34 yards by Burcham, 14 by Mollet, and 13 by Anderson along with passes from Oberle to Teigen (18 yards) and Mollet (14 yards) for the final Tanager TD. SSC scored their lone TD at the end of the game and the final score was 34-8 for Vermillion.

Individual offensive stats: Ben Oberle (94 yards/11 carries), Jared Burcham (59 yards/4 carries), Kyle Mollet (49/10) and Jordan Anderson (31/9).

Oberle completed four of five passes/89 yards. Teigen caught two passes totaling 53 yards; and Jared Burcham received one for 12 yards, Mollet caught a 14-yard pass..

A stiff defense involving the whole Vermillion roster had some sterling efforts by: Paul Hugo (eight tackles, one for a loss, and a QB sack), Jon Miller (five T�s and a fumble recovery); Alex Baran (five T�s), Kevin Beile and Tyler Brown (four T�s, a pass breakup each). Thirteen other defensemen were in on two or three tackles each.
