Tanager volleyball falls to AA opponents by Jim Prosser The Vermillion volleyball team faced four AA class schools Saturday, Sept. 7 when they were entered in the Yankton Invitational. They were assigned to a pool which included Brookings and Mit-chell, and were losers 1-2 in both contests.

�The tale of the day was a lack of communication and a breakdown in passing,� according to coach Lenni Billberg.

In the Brookings match, the Tanagers won the first game, then lost the next two.

The team stats were led by Dru VanKley with six kills, six blocks (three solos), two aces, and seven digs. She was aided by Ashley Bjorkman with 2.55 P.E., one ace, five digs, two kills, and four blocks.

Also contributing were: Whitney Tolsma � four kills, two aces, one block and two digs; Annie Carlson � five digs, one kill and one ace; and Ellen Odson � one block,12 assists, and an ace.

The match against the Kernels was much the same. Bjorkman led with seven digs, five kills, five service points and one ace. Tolsma had one block assist, three kills, two aces, and five digs. VanKley had one block, five kills, two sp and seven digs; Carlson scored one block, four kills, seven sp and one dig; Colette Joy registered three kills, one ace, and two sp; Odson was credited with 14 assists.

The final matches were against Sioux Falls Washington and Sioux Falls O�Gorman and resulted in 0 � 2 games against each of them.

Stats for the Sioux Falls Washington match were: Bjorkman � one block, two kills, two aces and five digs; Tolsma � two kills, two aces, four digs; VanKley � one block, three digs; Carlson � two kills, four digs; Odson � seven assists, one dig.

O�Gorman match stats were: Bjorkman � three blocks, three aces, five digs; Tolsma � eight digs; VanKley � five blocks, four aces, five digs; Carlson � three blocks, two digs; Odson � three aces, two digs.

�The Tanagers are at the same level as the AA teams, physically, but mentally we have some work to do,� Billberg said. �Highlights for the day were the winning games against Brookings and Mitchell.�
