Tanager volleyball goes 2-1 at tourney by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanager volleyball team played in a 12 team tournament at the BonHomme Invitational. Three pools with four teams in each were used to determine the qualifiers for the championship rounds.
Vermillion lost one and won two in the preliminaries but couldn't qualify for the playoff finals due to a tie-breaker stipulation. Pool play results follow.
Match #1 with Gregory resulted in the VHS team losing 25-10, 25-20. Leaders for the Tanagers were Ashley Bjorkman � 2.75 PE, five kills, one ace, and 10 digs; Jackie Thomas � 12 assists and four digs; Dru VanKley � 2.25 PE, two K, two aces, and six D. Whitney Tolsma had one kill, and 10 digs.
Match #2 with Lennox ended in a 25-23, 25-15 win for VHS. The members of the Tanager team stars were: Ellen Odson, who scored the most assists with eight along with one ace and four digs; Tolsma, who had three aces, 2.0 PE, four K and 10 D. Bjorkman led the defense with two B, seven D, 2.75 PE, two kills and seven digs; VanKley had 2.4 PE, two B, one K, one ace, five D; and Annie Carlson had 2.6 PE, one B and nine D.
Match #3 with Wagner gave the Tanagers a win as they scored 25-16, 20-25, and 17-15 in a three game match.
Odson, with 22 assists, three aces, six digs and one block led assists again. Tolsma had 2.7 PE, one ace, two B, five K, and she also had 13 digs; Bjorkman had seven kills, one ace, one B, and 10 digs; VanKley recorded two B, one A, six B, and seven kills; Carlson had two K, one ace, six D; Collette Joy had four K, one ace, six digs; and Nikki Nelson and Jena Mulder each had three digs.
"The Tanagers' homecoming weekend ended with a little heartbreak, but showed the strength of the young ladies of Vermillion," said coach Lenni Billberg. "After a slow start against a tough Gregory team, the girls came back as they rolled over Wagner and Lennox. Successes for the day include great team passing and a never-say-die-attitude.
"Overcoming final game deficits in both winning matches, these young Redbirds came back again and again, giving them a shot at the semi's," the coach said. "Great play from Ashley and Whitney were team highlights."
The Tanagers' tournament record is 2-1 and their season record is 5-5.
