Tanagers win matches at Lennox/Todd County dual by Jim Prosser The Vermillion volleyball team opened its season Sept. 3, when it swept by the Todd County Falcons and Lennox in a triagular match hosted by the Orioles.
Besides having the season schedule moved to the fall, several changes were instituted for scoring procedures. Matches are three best of five games with rally scoring (every point counts, no matter the server) and the play ends when the leading team scores 25.
In the Lennox match, the Tanagers won 3-1, (19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22) while salvaging a 3 to 2 game victory over Todd County (25-17, 21- 25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13).
The tie break game goes to 15 points (or a two point advantage past 15).
In the second year for head coach Lenni Billbergs varsity, there are seven senior and junior returning letterwinners. They are joined with five sophomores to form the 2002 season roster.
In the first game against the Orioles, the Tanagers were unable to make up early deficits, but the last three games of the match were more competitive. Leading the Tanagers was Ashley Bjorkman with 10 kills, four blocks, two aces, and 20 digs. She was aided by Dru VanKley with four aces, 17 digs, seven kills, and six blocks.
Also making major contributions were: Whitney Tolsma four kills, two aces, three blocks and 20 digs; Colette Joy, with a perfect three in passing efficiency, had two aces, seven digs, two blocks, and nine kills. Also, Annie Carlson had seven digs, five kills, two blocks, and two aces; and Ellen Odson had two blocks, nine digs, two aces and a kill.
The match against the Falcons was an exciting close scoring affair and created a lot of stats for the Tanagers. Bjorkman again led with 23 digs, eight kills, and four aces. Tolsma led with seven block assists with seven kills, two aces, and 15 digs. VanKley had five blocks, seven kills, four aces and 20 digs; Carlson scored four blocks (two solos), eight kills, two aces, and 16 digs; Joy registered two blocks, five kills, one ace and one dig. Jackie Thomas and Odson each were credited with 10 digs and one ace.
