Men's League
The league playoffs continued on Aug. 29, using the back nine tee boxes. Eight teams survived some very close matches, with Recuerdos/Silver$ and Freeswingers being the only two teams to outscore their opponents by 15.5 to 7.5 points.
First National Bank defeated LBA Interiors and Bluffs Boys outpointed Alkota to set up the third round pairings for the Red flight.
The Blue flight had SVVC, D.O. Double G, and Pros overcoming Miller Lite, The Divots and Bud Light. But the first match of the flight ended with a tie between Chalky's and Serious Six, requiring a playoff which had to be scheduled at a later time and date (because of darkness).
The third round pairings follow this report.
Par was broken by two golfers with 34s Bill Willroth and Brett Hogen, for low individual scratch score. Other under 40 scores were: Rick Haught (37) and Chad Lavin (38); Tom Schaack and Brian Steele (39 each).
Scores of 40 were claimed by Dennis Bruce, Joe Bjorkman, Kevin Brown and Gary Prosser. Willroth was credited with a lowest net 31.
There were 21 birdies for the day. Willroth had four on 10, 11, 15 and 16; Hogen had three on 10, 13 and 14; Brown birdied #13 and #18.
UPDATE: The sudden death playoff pitted Dennis Chandler against Troy Nicks and was contested on the back nine on Tuesday Sept. 3, where Chandler birdied #10 and Nicks didn't, so Serious Six is playing SVVC.
Red Flight
1. Recuerdos/Silver$ vs. 4. First National Bank
3. Bluffs Boys vs. 10. Free Swingers
Blue Flight
9. Serious Six vs. 13. SVVC
2. Pros vs. 11. D.O. Double G
Senior Men's Fun Golf League
Great weather for golf greeted 33 seniors at The Bluffs on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The breeze was gentle, temperatures moderate, the greens were great and the grass off the fairway was tough and yet the scores were good.
In fact, our winning team of Mo Marcotte, Stan Munger and Herb Dahlman, a guest, posted a two under par score of 34 on the back nine. This is the lowest score posted this season on the back nine. Congratulations to our winners.
Our other prize winners were, at 37, Dave Raabe, Harlan Schott and Howard Connors; at 39, Sid Davis, Berwyn Svoboda, Jack Doyle and Don Benson, along with Pete Berglund, Dick Munkvold, Quentin Olseson and Louie Fostvedt and finally the team of Loren Carlson, Vern Christensen and Bob Lund.
Birdies were hard to get this date. We had but three and two of them were scored by Mo Marcotte's team and the third by Pete Berglund's team.
Special shot-of-the-day awards go to Quentin Oleson for his birdie putt on #15 and Louie Fostvedt for excellent approach shots on #13 and #18. Congratulations to both of these regulars.
Senior Fun Golf is scheduled each Tuesday at The Bluffs with coffee, donuts, and conversation at 8:30 a.m. and tee off at 9:20 a.m. or so followed by a lunch at noon. Plan to enjoy these fine golf days during the fall season.
Wednesday Ladies Golf, Bridge & Dominoes
The 14 lady golfers played Bingo, Bango, Bongo and No Rough Stuff on Aug. 28. The winners were Phyllis Christol, Meryl Reed, Helen Brown, Eileen Turner, Jo Ann Beringer and Glennis Stewart.
The Cherry Street Grille catered taco salad for 36 members. Peg Amant and Mary Bartels brought the dessert bars and cookies.
Carol Clodfelter won the car wash. Ellie Davis got the $10 member drawing and Trudie Klopper the $5 drawing.
The four tables of bridge played Dealer Gets Choice of Hands. The four winners above and closest to 2500 were Arlene DeVany, Reidella Engman, Doris Mitchell and Marilyn Johnson. The four winners below were Mary Ann Welden, Eleanor Munger, Ellie Davis and Lorraine Brunick. The low scorer for the dominoes players was Karine Amundson. High score, Fritz Lefler; High round, Kay Heikes and caught with double aught was Beverly Mount. The low score winner on Aug. 31 was Dorothy Dahlman.
Wednesday Evening Ladies League
On our last night of league the weather behaved as it did on our first night it rained us out. Teams managed to play a number of holes, ranging from 2 to 4, before the horn was blown. One golfer who was certainly disappointed with the weather shortening her round was Nora Remily. Nora had played four holes before being called in, and she had birdied three of them! She birdied holes 11, 12 and 13. Shelia Prosser was also off to a flying start, playing only two holes and getting a birdie on one of them (#17). Now they'll have to wait until next year to use those scores for points.
After returning to the clubhouse, elections were held to select officers for next year. The final slate is as follows: President Susan Oberle (again); Vice-President Nichol Stevens; Treasurer Lynette Wulff; Secretary Robin Miskimins; Statistician Darlis LaBahn (who ran off to Kentucky as soon as she found out she was still in this job). The (semi-) new executive committee invites everyone's suggestions on how to improve the league next season.
