USD soccer team loses 3-2 decision to Rockhurst The University of South Dakota women's soccer team (2-3) failed to hold on to a 2-0 lead in the final 20 minutes of the match to lose 3-2 to Rockhurst (4-0), on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the USD Soccer field. Earlier in the day, Emporia State shutout Augustana, 4-0.
A flip-throw from senior Jamie Strong, McCook Lake, went directly into the goal at 57:47 for the first goal of the match. Senior Janel Johnson, Bellevue, NE scored at 68:37 off a throw-in by Strong and an assist by freshman Beth Schuster, Omaha, NE to put the Coyotes ahead, 2-0. Rockhurst was on the board at 73:21 off a direct kick into the goal. Rockhurst tied the game at 72:28 and shot in the winning goal at 81:32.
South Dakota had 20 shots including six from junior Teri Atkinson, Springfield, IL. Strong finished the game with two shots, one goal and one assist, while Johnson recorded three shots and one goal. Freshman keeper Candice Martinez, Aurora, CO, played the first half with two saves, facing 10 shots. Freshman keeper Lindsay Mehlhaff, Lincoln NE came in the second half and had four saves and allowed three goals after facing 12 shots. Rockhurst had 22 shots with three goals and two assists.
South Dakota travels to Morris, MN, for the NCC/NSIC Crossover Tournament on Sept. 13-14. South Dakota will face Southwest State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, and Minnesota Morris at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. The Coyotes return home at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 against Northern State.
