USD volleyball wins two straight Senior Amber Abrams of Rapid City, tallied 23 kills with a .432 hitting percentage to lead The University of South Dakota women's volleyball team (3-3) to a 3-2 win (24-30, 30-27, 23-30, 32-30, 24-22) over Fort Hays State on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Fort Hays State Tournament in Hays, KS. With the games tied at 2-2, South Dakota won an intense fifth game with a score of 24-22. Junior Becky Olson of Norfolk, NE, had 20 kills on 51 attacks for a .255 hitting percentage. Olson also had one service ace, six digs and two block assists. In an earlier match, South Dakota swept Tarleton State, 3-0 (30-25, 30-15, 35-33).
In the Fort Hays State match, sophomore Lindsey Soukup recorded a team-high 15 digs along with 14 kills and one block assist. Sophomore middle blocker Laura Marske, Spencer, IA, finished the match with four block solos and two block assists.
As a team, the Coyotes had 78 kills on 189 attacks with 20 errors for a .307 hitting percentage. They also had 67 set assists, 59 digs, four block solos and six block assists. Tarleton State had 82 kills on 195 attacks with 24 errors for a .297 hitting percentage.
Olson led South Dakota in the sweep over Tarleton State as she tallied 13 digs and 12 kills with a .478 hitting percentage. Olson finished the match with 12 kills on 23 attacks with one error for .478 hitting percentage. She also had two service aces, three block assists and four set assists to lead the Coyotes.
Against Tarleton State, South Dakota had its best serving performance this season with 13 service aces, led by Soukup and freshman Kristin Miller, Papillion, NE, who had three each. Olson, Marske, and senior setter Lyndsey Finney, Scottsbluff NE, all had two service aces each.
Senior Amber Abrams Rapid City, had nine kills and two digs for South Dakota, while Soukup finished with six kills, three service aces and five digs. Finney had 24 set assists with four block assists, three digs and two service aces. As a team, South Dakota had 39 kills on 99 total attacks for a .232 hitting percentage. The Coyotes also had 34 digs, 12 block assists and 32 set assists. The Coyotes held Tarleton to just a .042 hitting percentage.
with 37 kills on 118 attacks and 32 errors. Tarleton State had just two block assists and seven service aces and 13 receiving errors.
The Coyotes continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. when they face Southern Colorado and at 3 p.m. when they play Rockhurst. South Dakota opens at home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10 against Wayne State.
