VB: Marion Spoils Cards’ Season Opener

VB: Marion Spoils Cards' Season Opener IRENE — The Marion Bears surpassed the Irene Cardinals 25-13, 25-10, 25-12 Thursday night in Irene.

Leading the Bears was players Andrea Shardin with six aces and Kari Kippes with five ace serves. Bobbi Dykstra and Audra Smith led the team in kills with five each. Kippes also led the team in set assists with 19 for the night. Smith and Dykstra each had one block, and Smith topped the team in digs with 10.

Ashley McDonald was the leading server with 2 aces. Chelsey Erickson led the Cardinals in kills with three, and Shannon Knutson had two kills. Leading in set assists was Kayla Poncelet with 15, and Heather Viergutz came up with seven. Rose Hauger topped the team with blocks with three, and Knutson went to the floor for 22 digs.

Marion won the B-Match over Irene 2-1, and the C-Match 2-0.

Marion will play next in the Cornbelt Conference on Saturday, and Irene will play Wakonda on Tuesday.

Gayville-Volin 3, Vermillion JV 2

GAYVILLE — The Gayville-Volin Radirettes defeated the Vermillion JV Tanagers 25-21, 25-15, 18-25, 21-25, 16-14 Thursday night.

Cayla Christiansen led the Radirettes with 14 points and seven aces. Laura Brown scored 13 points and had one ace serve, and Alisha Hemmer scored 12 points with eight ace serves. Becky Jepsen was the leading kill artists with eight, and Valerie Bye had five kills. Hemmer also was the leader in set assists with five. Jepsen had one solo block, Bye one solo, and one assisted block. Leading the team in digs was Hemmer and Bye each with seven.

Gayville-Volin won the B-Match 2-0.
