VHS JV football falls to Yankton Bucks 25-6 by Jim Prosser The venue for the Sept. 16 game that pitted the Tanager JV team against the Yankton sophomores was the VHS football complex. The visitors took advantage of some Vermillion misscues early in the contest, scoring twice in the first quarter. Fumbles and penalties gave Yankton a short field and thwarted any attempts by Vermillion to move the ball, at first.
The Tanager defense closed ranks and, with a renewed effort, were able to contain the Bucks' offense for most of the next three quarters while scoring a touchdown in the third quarter.
Misfortune struck again when the visiting team scored 11 points in the last four minutes, beginning with a 65-yard run by Kyle LaCroix. A 37-yard field goal by Dan Sternhagen following a fumble on the preceding kick off made the final score 25-6 for Yankton. Total yards for the game were surprisingly even, Vermillion 205, Yankton 203.
Vermillion quarterback Ben Oberle, gained 64 yards rushing on nine carries and was 2 for 6 passing for 21 yards. Kyle Mollet rushed for 73 yards on 16 carries.
Yankton's leading rusher was LaCroix with 120 yards on 10 carries.
The tackle chart shows Jordan Anderson and Chris Teigen with seven each, and Jason Donald had six.
Jon Miller and Sean Pederson each registered five Ts; Kyle Mollet, Mike Hanson, and Ryan Mockler each recorded four Ts.
The JV early season record is 1-1.
