Eighth-grade Redbirds defeated by Canton 42-0 by Jim Prosser Temperatures in the high 50s greeted the Redbird eighth- grade football team when they went to Canton on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Demonstrating an awesome display of intensity and speed on both defense and offense, the home standing young C-Hawks held the VMS team to three first downs on 40 yards total, while racking up six TDs on over 250 yards to register a 42-0 thumping of the visitors.
Offensive stats were sparse: Matt Milldrum gained 26 yds on nine carries and had a reception for five yards; Ryan Gilbertson had six rushes for 23 yards; and Ryan Scheidel went 1 for 8 passing (five yards) and rushed four times for minus 14 yards total.
The Redbird defense was a community project as it bent a lot, and broke several times. In the late minutes of the game, 64 and 40 yard runs for TDs were allowed.
Leading tacklers were the quintet of Nick Rasmussen, Zach Weiss, Chris Taylor, Bobby Dykstra, and Milldrum, all who recorded four tackles each; Highrock Fisher claimed three Ts; Scheidel had only three Ts, but one was a sack and he also forced a fumble; Gilbertson and Milldrum each recovered a fumble.
Altogether, 15 different Redbirds were on the tackle chart. The loss brought their season record to 1 and 3 before action with Elk Point on Thursday, Oct. 10.
