Huskies defeat VHS in Oct. 14 volleyball action by Jim Prosser Vermillion has a long history of traditional athletic foes like Lennox, West Central, and Canton, but in recent years some new competition with area schools like EP-J, Beresford, Alcester/Hudson, and Dakota Valley means more challengers for athletic supremacy.
At the VHS gym last Tuesday Oct. 15, the visiting Huskies from EP-J topped the Tanagers 3-0 in a close scoring volleyball match 25-16, 25-22, 25-23, bringing the season record for the Tanagers to 7-9 while the Huskies are at 12-10.
Dru VanKley lead the Tanager offense with six aces, six kills, and 14 digs. Ashley Bjorkman scored five kills, and 14 digs. Ellen Odson had 10 assists; Annie Carlson had two blocks and nine digs.
For the Huskies, Katie Weavil had 21 SP, five aces and 16 digs; Melissa Mau � 15 SP, four aces, 12 kills, and 15 assists; Leslie Nebelsick scored 12 kills and 13 digs; Jiska Gojowczyk lead the blockers with 10 and recorded 14 digs, while Katie Trometer added 15 assists.
The Vermillion junior varsity didn't fare too well either two games 25-23, 25-18. Heather Walker led offensively with two aces, four kills and a block; Melissa Olson had six digs and an ace serve; Laura Aga recorded two kills and five digs; Jackie Thomas had five digs, a block, and seven set assists. The JV record is 2-9.
The freshmen had opened the night with a 25-19, 25-13 two game winning sweep.
Michelle Olson had five aces, two kills, and eight digs; Paige Prosser and Tricia Merrigan each had two aces; Brittney Babb scored three kills; Heather Walker � one kill, one block; Brittany Campbell � one kill, six set assists; Becky Hanson � five digs; and Sami Mount � two digs.
The C team record is 5-3.
