Pharmacists to conduct diabetes screening A statewide diabetes screening will be held in conjunction with National Pharmacy Week, Oct. 20-26.
Vermillion Pharmacists from Choice and Hy-Vee Pharmacy have asked all area residents of all ages to take advantage of a free diabetes screening. Individuals with elevated results will be referred to their medical provider for evaluation and treatment.
Diabetes kills over 200 South Dakotans every year, and uncontrolled diabetes leads to complications like blindness, amputations, and kidney failure.
As many as one-third of the 43,000 South Dakotans who have diabetes don't even know it.
Early detection is important because appropriate management of diabetes can significantly reduce the impact of the disease.
The screening at Choice Pharmacy will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hy-Vee Pharmacy will host the screenings on Oct. 21, 23 and 25 from 9 to 11 a.m., and Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
