Redbird football defeated by Elk Point/Jefferson 18-0 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Redbird football team came away with another loss Thursday, Oct. 10 as they faced a taller, heavier Elk Point Middle School squad.
It was a usual defensive battle but the home team took advantage of three big plays to down Vermillion 18-0.
Offensive stats were less than might be expected: Matt Milldrum gained 29 yards on nine carries; Ryan Gilbertson had six rushes for six yards; Jose Nesselhuf gained 13 yards on one carry and Ryan Scheidel went 0 for 5 passing and rushed once for one yard.
The Redbird defense was good as it bent a lot, but gave up those three big plays. Leading tackler was Chris Taylor who collected eight tackles; Bobby Dykstra and Gilbertson each had four Ts; Jeff Donnelly, Tyler Theodorff, and Highrock Fisher claimed three Ts each; Tim Bleil and Nick Rasmussen were credited with two Ts each. Zach Weise recovered a fumble, and Donnelly intercepted a pass. Scheidel had only three Ts, but one was a sack and he also forced a fumble.
The loss brings the team's season record to 1 and 4 as they will host Brandon Valley on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Yankton on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
