Sioux Falls Washington takes Tanagers in tennis by Jim Prosser The Tanagers faced Sioux Falls Washington in a tennis dual at the USD courts Thursday, Oct. 3.
"It was a good overall showing for us against Sioux Falls Washington," said Coach Barb Rickord. "Maya Ristic had a good match against a strong #1 player, Katy Jelsma. Tori Collins and Britt Fremstad are playing really well as we look forward to the state tournament Oct. 10-12 in Sioux Falls." Results follow:
Singles: Katy Jelsma (W) defeated Maya Ristic 5-4, 5-7, (7-5); Catherine Odson (V) lost to Chris Lanpher 6-1, 6-1; Anita Zaske (W) defeated Michelle Rydell 6-3, 6-0; Tori Collins (V) defeated Victoria Zawanda (W) 6-3, 5-7, (7-3); Alisha Vandeblaar (W) defeated Deanna Russell 6-4, 6-1; Britt Fremstad (V) defeated Rachael Feinstein 6-3, 6-4.
Doubles: Ristic/Odson (V) lost to Jelsma/Lanpher 6-1, 6-4; Zawanda/Zaska (W) defeated Collins/Rydell 6-1, 6-4; Russell/Fremstad (V) defeated Vandeblaar/Anna Brown 6-4, 6-3.
JV singles: Anna Brown (W) defeated Varsha Ramakrishnan 8-5; Jenna Williams (V) defeated Katie Olwell 8-5; Emily Zweep (W) defeated Lisa Doohen 8-5; Anna Brown (W) defeated Jenny Bremer 8-3; Lindsey Royal (W) defeated Yuki Morita 8-1; Julia Brown (W) defeated Liz Day 8-3; Zweep defeated Morita 8-0; and Morita defeated Julia Brown 8-4.
"Varsha and Jenna played very well. I am also proud of Yuki for winning a match, since she had never played tennis before coming to Vermillion in August," Rickord said.
JV doubles: Royal/Olwell (W) defeated Ramakrishnan 8-4; and Bremer/Doohen defeated Zweep/J.Brown 8-2.
"Lisa always does a good job for us, and Jenny is developing into a good doubles player," said the coach.
