Tanager tennis team loses close match against Mitchell by Jim Prosser The Mitchell Kernels girls' tennis team left Vermillion with a close 6-3 victory over the Tanagers in a dual match on Monday, Sept. 30, with several matches won with tiebreakers.
"The match hinged on a couple tiebreaks that didn't go our way. We are evenly matched with Mitchell and it could have gone either way," said coach Barb Rickord. "Catherine Odson played an excellent match to win at #2 singles, and the doubles teams continue to improve."

Maya Ristic (V) defeated Jena Wenande (M) 6-0,6-1; Catherine Odson (V) defeated Karmyn Hettinger 6-1, 6-3; Anne Konechne (M) defeated Michelle Rydell 6-2, 7-5; Laura Osterloo (M) defeated Tori Collins 6-4, 6-2; Lora Healy (M) defeated Britt Fremstad 5-7, 6-4, (8-6); Ashley Brenden (M) defeated Varsha Ramakrishnan 6-0, 6-3.
Ristic/Odson defeated Wenande/Hettinger 6-1, 6-1; Anderson/Konechne (M) defeated Rydell/Collins 6-4, 6-7 (7-3); Healy/Osterloo (M) defeated Fremstad/ Deanna Russell 6-2, 7-6.
In the JV matches, Jenna Williams (V) lost to Selena Anderson 8-3; Lisa Dooen (V) fell to Sarah Thompson 8-0; Jenny Bremer was defeated by Jen Logan 8-1; Sarah Roetman (V) lost to Anne Aslesen 8-2; Jordan Kennedy (M) defeated Yuki Morita 8-3; Sarah Thompson (M) defeated Liz Day 8-0; Thopson defeated Morita 6-0; and Ramakrishnan (V) defeated Kennedy 8-4. In doubles: Amanda Aslesen/Logan (M) defeated Roetman/Bremer 8-5; and Thompson/Kennedy (M) defeated Williams/Doohen 8-3.
According to coach Rickord, "Our JV players had some good tennis matches. I'm happy that Yuki and Liz both were able to gain experience in the JV competition."
