Tanagers draw with Brookings in soccer The Vermillion Lady Tanagers scored a 4-4 draw with the Brookings Bobcats in a match played Oct. 1 in Brookings.
The Tanagers opened the scoring in the ninth minute when midfielder Tara Job found net from 20 yards away. Striker Emma Erickson was credited with an assist on the goal. Erickson added an unassisted goal in the 19th minute to take the Tanagers to a 2-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Erickson was fouled in the penalty area by a Brookings defender, and Job stepped to the penalty spot to put in the third goal for the Tanagers. A late first-half goal by Brookings resulted in a 3-1 halftime lead for Vermillion.
A shaky Tanager defense entered the field for the second half, and three goals were conceded in the next 15 minutes. A late goal by Tanager midfielder Carly Bernard allowed the Tanagers to preserve a tie, their fourth on the season.
"The positive part of this match was the fact that we scored four goals," said Coach Jeff Pederson. "Our midfield play was particularly effective and as a result we created a good number of scoring chances. It is unfortunate that we came out in the second half flat on defense."
