USD's Beta Theta Pi assists MDA telethon The Beta Theta Pi chapter at The University of South Dakota recently participated in the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Telethon held in Sioux Falls. Fraternity members answered phone calls and took pledges in this annual fund-raising event for Jerry's Kids held on Labor Day.
The fraternity also presented a $350 check to MDA, which was raised last semester from Beta Theta Pi's annual Bid-A-Beta philanthropy event, according to Beta Theta Pi member Seth Artz.
The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association was inaugurated on Labor Day weekend in 1966. The initial show, broadcast by only one station in New York City, was the first televised fund-raising event of its kind to raise more than $1 million in pledges.
In 1998, the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon became the first worldwide telethon; with an Internet simulcast of the national broadcast, hosted by RealNetworks, seen at www.mdausa. org, MDA's Web site.
