VHS cross country teams place second in Region 2A meet Oct. 18 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanager boys' cross country team scored 42 points to place second at the Region 2A meet ran at Lenkota Country Club in Lennox on Friday, Oct. 18.
The top VHS runner with a clocking of 17:21 was Justin Manning who was third in the 11-team 5,000M division. Katarina Gombocz finished in fourth place with a 15:45 time to pace the Tanager girls to second place in their 10-team 4,000M division.
Other Tanagers placing in the boys' division were: Fourth � Craig Powell (17:38); 14th � A.J. Manning; 21st � Mitch Bierle; 25th � Wilber Lio; and 32nd � Dan Pearson.
Other Vermillion girl finishers, in their division were: 13th � Nicki Mollet; 14th � Kayla Nelson; 24th � Morgan Brooks; 25th � Katie Dehner; and 41st � Sarah Plate.
The Tanagers' 55 score was two points from first place. The first runner across the finish line for the girls was Sierra McCauley (Dakota Valley) with a 15:14.2 time.
The SDHAA cross country meet will be conducted at Huron on Saturday noon, Oct. 26.
There were also JV boys' and girls' divisions in the Region 2A meet.
Vermillion placed first in the boys' race, and second in the girls' section.
Bobby Punt was first among team runners, and Danny Shen was second. Other Tanager finishers were: Anish Patel � fifth; Tom Dendinger � sixth; Danny Redlin � seventh; and Caleb Berry � 11th.
Raleigh Tiarht and Felix Woelk were also in the race but did not place. There were 42 runners in the division.
There were 35 runners in the girls' division and Vermillion finishers in the top 20 were: Theresa Ring � sixth; Tera Dehner � seventh; Kayla Mollet � eighth; Megan Bedard � 11th and Alisha O'Connor � 12th.
Running but not placing were Sasheen Thin Elk, Mary Ann Bierle, Magann LeCates, and Mikayla Herrick.
