VHS loses at volleyball classic; eight teams compete Sept. 28 by Jim Prosser A new format for competition at the Southeast Area Classic meant the scrapping of the pool arrangement and using single elimination to determine all eight places in the tournament which was played at Elk Point on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The Tanager volleyball team was joined by host Elk Point/Jefferson, Gregory, Harrisburg, Lennox, Milbank, Parkston and West Central to make up the field for competition.
In the first round Vermillion lost to Parkston 25-18, 18-25, 26-24, and 25-18. Consolation round had Lennox defeating the Tanagers 25-17, 25-23. Consolation finals placed VHS against Gregory who prevailed 26-24, 25-17.
Team final places were: First � Milbank; second � EP/J; third � Parkston; fourth � Harrisburg; fifth � West Central; sixth � Lennox; seventh � Gregory; and eighth � Vermillion.
Tanager statistics were: Match #1: Ashley Bjorkman � one B, four K, three aces, 23 D; Ellen Odson 12 assists, four aces, six digs; Whitney Tolsma � six K, four aces, seven K; Dru VanKley � 12 K, one ace, one B, 14 D; Annie Carlson � one B, four K, 2 aces, 13 D; Colette Joy � five K, seven D.
Match #2: Bjorkman � 13 D, four K; Carlson � one B, one K, seven D, 3.0 PE; Odson � 16 assists, one ace, two D; Nikki Nelson � one ace, seven D, 3.0 PE.
Match #3: Bjorkman � nine K, one ace, 10 D; Odson � 12 assists, one ace, three D; Carlson � three K, seven D; Jena Mulder � one ace, four D; Tolsma � three K, two aces, five D; Van Kley � two K, one ace, two D.
