WHS boys' cross country wins regions by Heather Hessman Last year's Region 3B Boys' Cross Country Champion trophy went to Wakonda. That team has created a pattern, as they once again were crowned champions.
A beautiful autumn Wednesday in Freeman set the scene for the Oct. 16 races.
Nick Skonhovd, a WHS junior, crossed the ribbon first as he ran a personal best 15:59 to claim top honors for the second year in a row. Robert Gregoire, freshman, placed second as he ran a close 16:08 personal best. Fifth place was sophomore and Nick's brother Eric Skonhovd, 17:01; another personal best. Another Wakonda sophomore, Tyler Moser, posted his best ever time of 17:22 to help the team effort.
Bo Martz, eighth grader, crossed the finish line with a time of 18:07 for 16th place and a personal best time.
As a team the Wakonda boys scored an almost perfect seven and all five runners placed in the top 16 of the 38 participants.
At the end of the race, Nick Skonhovd edged out teammate Rob Gregoire who had been setting the pace.
The five Wakonda athletes will participate in the State Cross Country Championship at Huron Saturday, Oct. 26.
