Eighth-grade Redbirds have tough loss vs.Yankton by Jim Prosser The Redbird eighth-grade football team played a very entertaining close game against a determined and hard-hitting Yankton Middle School team at the VHS field on Thursday, Oct. 22, but couldn't overcome a couple of big plays by the opposition and suffered an 8-0 loss.
Yankton's scores were made on an early touchdown and a third quarter safety as the game was a usual defensive struggle dominated by the young Yankton players.
Matt Milldrum gained 34 yards on 12 carries and caught a pass for 11. He also returned a kickoff for 47 yards. Ryan Scheidel completed one of five passes with one interception, for the Redbirds.
The defense was effective for the entire game (except for those two scoring plays). Leading tacklers were: Harrison Hawley with six; Scheidel and Bobby Dykstra � five each; Zach Weiss � three Ts and fumble recovery; Jeff Donnelly � three Ts, pass interception. Also recording three tackles each were Nick Rasmussen, Highrock Fischer and Chris Taylor.
Kicking duties were handled by Jose Nesselhuf with three punts averaging 27 yards and two kickoffs for a 42-yard average. The season record ended with one win, six losses.
