Seventh-graders lose 8-0 The VMS seventh-grade football team came up with an 8-0 loss to Brandon Valley at the VHS field on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
The Redbird offense mounted only one attack and made several good gains by running the ball, but what has seemed to become a fault too often, lost the ball and momentum on a fumble, and were never able to get in the red zone again.
Matt Nelson rushed for 52 yards on 10 carries and Casey Carlson carried eight times for 34 yards.
The defense was awesome with three players recording five tackles each: Brook Hansen, Heath Hubert, and Alex Anderson-Kahl; and the leading tacklers were Daniel Storm with 10, and C.J. Haakinson eight; Michael Wilson had two pass breakups and three Ts.
"We just couldn't seem to avoid those crucial mistakes on offense which kept us in a continual battle trying to make up the scoring deficits," said coach Loren Tolsma. "All our losses this year have been by only a touchdown or less."
The season record ends at 6-1.

In a crisply played football game, the Tanager JV team took an early lead, courtesy of a 48-yard, 10-play, 5-minute drive capped by a 10-yard run by Adam Brunick in the first quarter, only to give up a short drive by the Yankton sophs to make the quarter score 8-8.
Vermillion took the lead on a 56-yard pass from Brunick to J.J. Lamie and never looked back as they scored three TDs in the second half to one by Yankton. Those TDs were accomplished by Ben Oberle (14-yard run), Rich Boyd (eight-yard run), and Kyle Mollet (11-yard pass from Brunick).
Individual offensive stats: Oberle (95 yards/20 carries) and Boyd (63 yards/13 carries); Brunick completed six of six passes/125 yards and rushed for 46 yards/eight carries.
A stiff defense showed some sterling efforts by: Boyd (11 Ts, two QBsacks); Oberle and Mike Hanson (seven Ts and a pass breakup each); Tyler Brown (six Ts); Lamie and Jordan Anderson (five Ts each); and Mollet (recovered a fumble, and intercepted a pass along with four Ts)
The Vermillion JV football team ended 2-5 for the season.
