Tanagers lose in overtime to Winner Warriors 22-14 By Jim Prosser Last Friday, Oct. 25, Vermillion faced a determined football team in the Warriors at Winner.
Playing on a cold, wet field, strewn by the remnants of a snowstorm piled along the sidelines and a few scattered patches along the edges, the Tanagers won the first half by rushing for 270 yards and scoring two touchdowns.
Then Winner took the second half, aided by a last second TD at the end of the second quarter and a ferocious defense which limited the visitors to only 35 yards rushing and 13 yards passing in the final two quarters.
The result was a deadlocked tie after regulation and the overtime procedure brought the Warriors a 22-14 win when their 10-yard pass play on fourth down could not be answered successfully by the Tanagers' fourth down pass attempt.
Vermillion's defense had many outstanding plays but couldn't overcome the first half last second score nor stop the second half bulldozer which used up over 100 yards and scored their second TD.
The leader with 12 tackles was Jeff Brevik. He was backed up by Bart Miller with 10 Ts and a pass intercept; and Collin Prosser 10 Ts, two QB sacks; Kellen Cusick and Drew Lawrence each recorded nine Ts; and Adam Bunick was credited with eight Ts along with Sean Pederson who had seven and a QB sack; B.J. Campbell had six Ts, and Brad Simons had a QB sack along with five Ts, as nearly 90 tackles were required to take down the Warrior rushers.
Cusick rushed 25 times for 172 yards and two TDs.
Campbell rushed 16 times for 92 yards.
Miller rushed two times for three yards.
Jon Brooks rushed two times for minus-13 yards.
Jared Burcham rushed one time for one yard.
Brandon Bell rushed 24 times for 183 yards and two TDs.
Travis Walker rushed seven times for 12 yards.
Jake Phillips rushed nine times for six yards.
Lance Engel rushed three times for nine yards.
Marty Kendrick rushed three times for four yards.
Brooks completed three of four passes for 24 yards.
Phillips completed two of five passes for 26 yards with one interception and one TD pass.
Campbell caught two passes for 11 yards.
Prosser caught one pass for 13 yards.
Walker caught two passes for 26 yards and one TD.
Vermillion will now take a 6-2 record into their first round playoff game against the Todd County Falcons. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31 in the DakotaDome.
"I was really disappointed with our inability to put Winner away when we had a 14-0 lead with two minutes to go in the first half," said coach Gary Culver. "By letting them score with 19 seconds to go before halftime, we let the momentum of the game completely shift to their side. We just did a poor job of tackling the Winner runners, especially Brandon Bell, throughout the entire contest.
"This is not the way we wanted the regular season to end, but now we have to get ourselves ready for the playoffs a brand new season for everyone," he continued. "I'm sure Todd County will come to the DakotaDome with great enthusiasm after winning their last three."
games of the season. We have to be ready to play each and every down like it was the last play of the season!"
