USD swimming and diving lose duals with Iowa Nov. 15 The University of South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped duals with the University of Iowa on Nov. 15 in Iowa City, Iowa. The men's team fell to Iowa, 195-94 while the women's team lost, 199-68.
While the Coyotes did not claim any titles in the dual with Iowa, they had a strong performance with a total of 28 second or third place finishes. The USD men had eight second place and eight third place finishes. The women had six second place and six third place finishes.
For the men's team, sophomore Dirk Craft (Palmer, AK) was second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.89) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.66). Sophomore Matt Lind (Kearney, NE) was second (49.53), senior Eric Dufek (Lander, WY), third (50.01) and senior Clint Eckhardt, fourth (51.08) in the 100 freestyle.
In the 1000 freestyle, the Coyotes took four of the top five placings. Eckhardt took second (10:12.17), sophomore Dave Degnan (Phoenix, AZ), third (10:16.34), junior Alex Girard (Cedar Falls, IA), fourth (10:31.17); and senior Jason Foster (Omaha, NE), fifth (10:48.32). Sophomore Tim Byers (Billings, MT) was third (54.16) and junior Jeremy Weed (Verona, WI), fourth (56.45) in the 100 backstroke. Byers also captured second (2:00.05) in the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Drew Fleek (Lincoln, NE) was third (2:00.18) and sophomore Robert Hastings (Sparks, NV), fourth (2:05.37) in the 200 backstroke. Freshman Kyle Anderson (Portland, OR) was second (2:19.95) in the 200 breaststroke and second (4:18.75) in the 400 IM.
Charles Scribner was third (3:19.44) and Eckhardt, fourth (4:30.37) in the 400 IM. Freshman Adrian Smith (Plano, TX) took second (4:56.58), Girard, third (5:02.22) and sophomore Dustin Tomhave (Vermillion), fourth (5:02.96) in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Tyler Scheer (Lincoln, NE) finished second (54.03), Lind, third (54.16), and Dufek, 4th (54.43)
in the 100 butterfly.
Freshman Cole Moir (Cody, WY) was fourth in men's one meter diving with 190.12 points and fourth in the 3-meter diving with 180.37 points. The "B" 400 freestyle relay was second (3:17.16) and the "A" squad, third (3:18.94).
In the women's competition, junior Lindsey Schaefer (Mandan, ND) picked up a pair of third place finishes in diving. In three meter diving, Schafer had 231.07 points and freshman Rebecca Olson (Cedar Falls, IA) was fourth with 229.05. Schafer had 241.87 points in one-meter diving and Olson was fourth with 210.15 points.
Junior Molly Connolly (Elkhorn, NE) took second in the 100 freestyle (56.20) and the 200 breaststroke (2:32.53). Sophomore Lacey Liebmann (Crystal Lake, IL) placed third in the 1,000 freestyle (11:23.11) and third in the 500 freestyle (5:38.83). Sophomore Audrey Donley (Arvada, CO) was second in the 500 freestyle (5:24.09) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.62).
Sophomore Theresa Eustice (Waseca, MN) was second (2:21.11) in the 200 backstroke, second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.74) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.19). Junior Ashley Schaper (Warroad, MN) was third (2:23.74) and freshman Christine Byrne (Caguas, Puerto Rico), fourth (2:24.13) in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Angie Stalker (Sheridan, WY) was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.06). Freshman Jessica Tietz (Williston, ND) was second in 400 IM (5:08.01).
The USD "B" freestyle relay (Stalker, Schaper, Liebman, and Tietz) was second (3:45.21) and the "A" relay team (Byrne, Donley, Karen Burke, and Connolly) was third (3:54.98).
Next for the Coyotes is a home dual with Metro State at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22 and a double dual with St. Cloud State and Metro State on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. on Parent's Day at the DakotaDome.
