Vermillion Polaris team wins Dakota Hoops Championship A total team effort characterized Vermillion Polaris seventh-grade basketball's championship win at the Dakota Hoops Tournament last weekend at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School. The locals topped S.F. Brooks 39-22 in fast-paced finals action.
Jordan Merrigan was the leading scorer with 8 points in a game where everyone made it into the scoring column. Close behind were C.J. Haakinson, Jordan Boots and Alex Schaack with 6 points apiece. Other scorers were Broc Gauer, 5; Jesse Kirkpatrick, 4; Mikal Ustad, two; and Daniel Storm, 2.
The rebounding leader was Haakinson with eight, while Boots, six, and Ustad, five, also contributed well. The team led 18-12 at halftime and expanded that lead early in the second half by holding Brooks scoreless for eight minutes.
Polaris opened the tourney on Friday night with a close victory over the S.F. Jaguars 37-33. Schaack, 18, and Boots, 12, paced the scoring effort. Also in the scoring column were Gauer, 6, and Haakinson, 1. Leading the rebounding effort were Merrigan with seven, Schaack with six, and Gauer with five.
The seventh-graders, coached by Joey James, totally over-matched their second opponent, S.F. Shade, by a 54-23 score. Boots and Gauer were the scoring leaders with 18 and 12 point outputs respectively. Finding the bucket for the balance of the scoring were Merrigan, 8, Kirkpatrick, 8, Ustad, 4, Storm, 2 and Schaack, 2.
Storm dominated the boards in the second half, pulling down six rebounds. Both Gauer and Boots contributed with five rebounds. Merrigan had three blocked shots during the game.
