Volleyball team loses to Beresford Watchdogs By Jim Prosser The VHS varsity volleyball team lost 3-0 at Beresford last Tuesday, Oct. 22 as they fell 25-22, 25-16, 15-10 in the Watchdogs' gym.
The preliminary matches involved the freshman girls on the C team who won a close 25-12, 11-25, 15-9 three-game squeaker to bring their season record to 7-4.
"We played well and have greatly improved, both defensively and offensively," said C team coach Rachel Stokes. "Heather Walker had a great game at the net."
Players cited for their play in the Beresford match were: Patricia Merrigan and Brittany Campbell with five and four aces; spikers Brittney Babb, Michelle Olson, and Merrigan with three, two, and one kills, respectively; leading setter Campbell had five assists while Heather Walker was credited with six blocks; while Olson, Paige Prosser, and Babb registered nine, six, and five digs in that order.
The junior varsity is coached by Mandi Muller, who has led her team to a 2-8 season record, had a swamping of the Watchdogs 30-29, 25-16 and said, "We came out really aggressive and ready to win. The girls showed a lot of heart and desire to play. I'm proud of them as they got the job done."
She wanted to recognize the following players for the Beresford match: Melissa Olson � five aces, four kills, seven digs; Jackie Thomas � four aces, eight set assists; and Jena Mulder � 10 digs; Babb � three kills, and Kelsie Austin � seven digs .
"Beresford put up a tough barrier for us," said head coach Lenni Billberg. "The hot hitting middles and powerful outside defense challenged the 'women in red.' Not to be dismissed, however, was the performances of the tough Tanager seniors. Grabbing 34 digs was Whitney Tolsma while Dru VanKley had 27. The Watchdogs were the hardest hitting team we've faced. We didn't win but gave them a run for their money!"
In the match the other Tanagers' statistics were: Ashley Bjorkman � PE 2.4, one ace, 17 K, 21 D; Tolsma � one B, four K.
, four aces; VanKley � one B, 2.85 PE, eight K, four aces; Colette Joy � one assist, eight K, 12 D; points, and Ellen Odson had 20 assists, seven D; and Thomas � one B, 16 assists.
