Wakonda student nominated for national program by Bethany Parvin Kayla Nielson, a Wakonda High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal's Leadership Award scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Herff Jones, Inc., funds the PLA program.
The secondary teachers of Wakonda High School announced the nomination which placed Nielson in the national competition. One hundred fifty national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive $1,000 college scholarships.
In considering both co-curricular activities and academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum.
Nielson has been active in band, chorus, all-school play, one-act play, singing for various occasions, Teens-in-Action president, student council secretary, basketball and golf.
NASSP, the preeminent school leadership organization, serves as the national voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant principals, and aspiring school leaders. NASSP promotes the intellectual growth, academic achievement, character development, leadership development, and physical well being of youth through its programs and student leadership services.
NASSP administers the National Honor SocietyTM, the National Junior Honor SocietyTM and the National Association of Student CouncilsTM.
NASSP is also the sponsor of National Student Leadership Week.
