WHS cross country is state runner-up by Andrew Peterson The South Dakota State Cross Country Meet was held in Huron Oct. 26.
Among the teams competing were Lower Brule, Salem, Freeman, Marion, Eureka, Yankton, Beresford, Frederick-Hecla, and Wakonda. These teams are among the top three of the five regions in South Dakota.
Coach Tony Skonhovd's team brought home a second place trophy and declared runner up honors. Lower Brule took the state championship with 17 points. WHS earned 21 points. Wakonda's boys' team qualified for the state meet, beating other area schools Oct. 16 at regions.
The cross country program has been up and running in Wakonda for three years now. They have qualified for state all three of those years. In order to qualify as a team, you need to place in the top three at regions and as an individual you need to place within the top 20. In order to figure team points they use the top three runners from each team.
Wakonda's boys' team consisted of Nick Skonhovd, Eric Skonhovd, Tyler Moser, Robby Gregoire, and Bo Martz. Wakonda's only girl runner that qualified for state was Katie Sokolowski. Nick Skonhovd placed seventh, Gregoire eighth, and Eric Skonhovd placed ninth. Moser placed 41st and Martz was in 97th.
The boys had a strong race and were great competitors. All five boys runners, as well as Sokolowski will return next year.
The places for the state "B" division are:
1. Lower Brule
