Alumni game raises funds by Tyler Knudson "They had the same moves, but just a lot slower," said one of the husbands as he watched his wife and other former stand-out Wakonda basketball players of the past play in the alumni game Dec. 7.
The contest set Hall of Fame coach Ron Flynn and 1994 Championship Coach Tim Pflanz against each other. Coach Pflanz with his younger team (class of 1997 through 2001) won by only two points after a hard-fought battle.
The event was a fundraiser for warm-ups for the team and a chance for the Wakonda After Prom Party to make some money by serving a lasagna supper.
The team collected over $300 for the event and W.A.P.P. found $600 in their free-will offering basket for their efforts a huge success.
The event welcomed back alumni Jenny Hall Amundson, Krista Morgen Wagner, Laurie Flynn Larson, Amy Vognild Anderson, Nicky Johnson Gilbertson, Becky Flynn Jensen, Andrea Prussa Orr, Casey Mount, Sarah Beatty, Stacy Lyso Olson, Megan Beatty, Lana Christensen Humpal, Erin Haver, Christine Donahue, Jamie Skonhovd, Connie Orr and Christe Bohlmann.
Before the game, Flynn was recognized for his achievements in his coaching career. He was inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame this past summer.
A plaque was presented to him to stay in the school's trophy area. Flynn won 351 games and lost only 68. He has won three state titles and appeared in seven state tournaments.
In his time at Wakonda he also compiled 12 consecutive Tri-Valley Conference Championship, eight district championships and seven region championships.
Flynn went 12 consecutive seasons without losing a conference game. He is now employed as superintendent at Akron-Westfield Public School.
