Bjorkman sparks Tanager girls' win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' varsity Tanagers trounced the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 68-29 in basketball Dec. 17 at Alcester in a win ignited by a first-quarter blitz.
Ashley Bjorkman led the Tanager's offense with 29 points.
"Ashley Bjorkman had a great game," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "The big difference this time out is that she was able to get to the line and shoot some free throws, she got a few of them early and her confidence really started to build from there. Twenty-nine points is an incredible game for a high school player!"
The Tanagers took the lead 21-7 after the first quarter, and margins of 12-8 and 18-10 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 51-25 going into the final period.
The Tanagers committed only seven turnovers in the victory.
"Overall we are very pleased with how the girls played tonight; along with Ashley's performance there were several others who played really well," said coach Parish. "Two kids in particular that I am very pleased with are Allison Stewart and Melissa Olson.
"Allison brings many intangibles to the game for us; she does a great job of boxing out, chasing down loose balls and makes good decisions with the basketball," he said. "Melissa is a kid that we have seen make some great post moves in practice. We are extremely excited to see them transferred over into a game situation. It's great to see her gain some confidence offensively and defensively, really getting after some rebounds."
Vermillion improved its season mark to 1-2, while Alcester-Hudson fell to 0-1.
Vermillion connected on 6 of 16 three-point tries and made 18 of 28 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 22 of 52 field goal attempts, while Alcester-Hudson was 10 of 43 from the field. Alcester-Hudson connected on 1 of 6 three-pointers and made 8 of 14 free throw attempts.
Vermillion held a 34-19 edge on the boards.
