Full court press is too much for Tanagers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' varsity Tanagers watched a second-half lead disappear and were downed by Sioux City West 45-33 in girls' basketball Dec. 14 at South Sioux City, NE in the first round of the South Sioux City Classic.

Vermillion had led by one at halftime.

"We played a respectable three quarters of basketball, then succumbed to a full court press and the resulting 10 turnovers led to 10 fast break points and a 14-2 fourth quarter score," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish.

The Tanagers led 10-9 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 23-22 at halftime, and the score was 31-all going into the fourth quarter.

The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 0-2, while SSC improved to 3-3.

Vermillion sank 3 of 6 three-point attempts and hit 2 of 2 from the line. The Tanagers hit 14 of 45 field goal attempts, while SSC was 17 of 51 from the field. SSC connected on 3 of 19 three-point attempts and made 8 of 15 free throw tries.

Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.

"Eighth-grader Annie Roche was brought up from the JV team to aid in replacing injured perimeter players," coach Parish said. "She did a commendable job."

HEAD:Harrisburg defeats Tanager boys 46-24

In a game that was closer than the final score indicated, the Vermillion freshman Tanagers lost to the Harrisburg Tigers 46-24 in boys' basketball Dec. 13 at home.

The Vermillion freshmen were down by only five at halftime.

The season-opening loss gave the Vermillion freshmen a record of 0-1 while Harrisburg moved to 1-0.

"For our first game, we played all right," said Vermillion freshmen coach Mark Iverson. "We had the shots we wanted but they just wouldn't fall."

The Tanagers fell behind 12-6 after the first quarter, trailed 16-11 after the second period, and then trailed 35-21 going into the final period.

The Vermillion freshmen sank 2 of 4 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 11 of 30 from the field, while Harrisburg was 20 of 40 from the field. The Tigers made 3 of 4 free throw tries.

The Vermillion Tanagers rallied to pull off an upset of the Harrisburg Tigers 45-43 in boys' basketball Dec. 13 at home.

The Vermillion JV had trailed by two going into the final period.

The season-opening win gave Vermillion JV a record of 1-0 while Harrisburg JV fell to 0-1.

Ben Oberle scored 12 points, made three assists and three steals. Matt Preszler added 11 points, and pulled down 11 rebounds.

"Ben Oberle and Matt Preszler led the offense," said Vermillion JV coach Rex Huska.

The game was knotted 8-8 at the end of the first period, the Tanagers trailed 21-15 after the second period, and then trailed 30-28 going into the final period.

The Vermillion JV held onto the win from the free throw line, making 13 of 24 charity tosses to 3 of 6 for Harrisburg JV.

"We have to shoot better," said coach Huska.

The Vermillion JV made 2 of 8 three-pointers. The Tanagers made 15 of 41 field goal attempts, while the Harrisburg JV was 19 of 49 from the field. The Harrisburg JV connected on 2 of 14 three-point tries.
