Tanager varsity wins season-opener 69-57 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat Harrisburg 69-57 in boys' basketball Dec. 13 at home in a win keyed by a 16-2 second-quarter edge.
The season-opening win gave the Vermillion varsity a record of 1-0 while Harrisburg fell to 0-2.
Leading the Tanagers were Nick Olson, who scored 27 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Jon Brooks, who contributed 11 points, three steals and three assists. Adam Brunick scored 8 points, made two assists, and two steals.
The Tanagers fell behind 16-14 at the end of the first period, led 30-18 after the second quarter, and then led 52-30 going into the final period.
The Vermillion varsity held onto the win from the free throw line, making 26 of 27 charity tosses to 7 of 11 for Harrisburg.
"I'm very pleased with the way we played," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We started out rough but did some really good things from the second quarter on. Harrisburg is a really good team."
The Vermillion varsity made 5 of 15 three-pointers. The Tanagers hit 19 of 44 field goal attempts, while Harrisburg was 22 of 57 from the field. Harrisburg made 6 of 20 three-pointers.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.
"Nick Olson was 12 for 12 from the free throw line, and the team was 26 for 27 from the line," coach Huska said.
