Bad second half play leads to Tanager loss by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were downed by the Lennox Orioles 47-35 in freshman boys' basketball Dec. 17 at home after falling prey to a 19-4 third-quarter deficit.
"We played a good first half, but committed 17 turnovers the second half," said Vermillion freshman coach Mark Iverson.
In the opening period, Kyle Brunick hit a half court shot at the buzzer to give the Tanagers a 13-12 lead.
The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 25 turnovers.
The Tanagers jumped in front 13-12 after the first quarter, trailed 24-21 at halftime, and then trailed 43-25 going into the fourth quarter.
The Vermillion freshmen saw their record fall to 1-2, while Lennox upped its mark to 1-0.
The Vermillion freshmen made 4 of 7 three-pointers and made 3 of 10 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 41 field goals, while Lennox was 20 of 45 from the field. Lennox hit 2 of 8 three-point attempts and made 5 of 9 free throw tries.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
"Randy Kabambi scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds," Coach Iverson said.
